Introduction

Brief History

Housing Development Department was formerly known as the department of Resettlement Water Village Residents to Land which has handled various National Resettlement Program and as in 1951 the resettlement of residents in Kampong Bendahara Lama (Water Village) was resettled to Bunut Resettlement Area in Mukim Kilanas. And also in 1953 similar resettlement program was also carried out for the residents in Kampong Burong Pingai Berakas, Kampong Pancha Delima, Kampong Pengiran SiRaja Muda, Kampong Anggerek Desa and Kampong Orang Kaya Besar Imas, all of which were in Mukim Berakas. In 1954, this department also involved in the resettlement of Kampong Jaya Setia and Kampong Jaya Bakti, both in Mukim Berakas and is also known as Kampong Perpindahan Berakas.

The Resettlement Department, which was set up more than two decades ago, was renamed the Housing Development Department (HDD) in August 1984. Consequently, its functions have been revised and expanded from a department which at the beginning only had to resettle the residents of Kampong Ayer (Water Village) on land to one entrusted with providing housing to the whole people of Brunei Darussalam.

"Provide quality and affordable housing facilities for eligible citizens of Brunei Darussalam"

Main Objectives

  • To upgrade the living standard of the people of Brunei Darussalam by resettling them in comfortable accommodation and environment replete with such facilities as school, mosque, clinic, sport arena and so forth.

  • Prevent the growth of disorderly construction of houses.

  • Provide housing to meet population growth involved in government schemes.

  • Harmonise the development national housing with the country's surroundings.

  • Unite and give opportunity as well as guidance to all especially those without the means to build their own houses.

  • Improve social condition or influence among the population.



Main Functions

  • Processing housing applications of National Housing Scheme.

  • Planning and preparing programme for qualified housing applications.

  • Implementing Housing Projects "Programme of National Housing Schemes"

  • Managing and controlling buildings in the National Housing Scheme and Landless Citizens Scheme area.
